10/13 Card Game
This week in class, my group and I came up with a card game. It had to cover the topic of travel in some capacity and players had to shed cards as the game went on. We made "Magellan's Mission." It is a card game where players compete on getting from 1 biome to the fourth biome. They craft items from resources they 'draw.' After they craft the materials the biome tells them they need, they move to the next biome. The first player to make it through all biomes and get back to civilization wins. Jess Schell in "Ten Tips for Productive Prototyping" says that first you have to answer a question. My group answered a ton of questions to try and make the game make sense, be fun, and continue staying fun throughout gameplay. The third tip from Schell says to "not get attached." Our group thought of an idea for a game one day and completely ditched it by our next class. We constantly evolved our game. Tip 5 from Schell says to "parallel prototypes productively." She then goes into explaining that the more parts and prototypes you have to your game, the more questions you can answer quickly. Our group split up into different roles to attack all aspects of the game faster and we ran multiple playtests to get feedback as well.
